Cryptocoryne walkeri

Cryptocoryne walkeri is a beautiful, hardy and relatively undemanding aquarium plant native to Sri Lanka. It belongs to the Cryptocoryne group that includes popular species such as Cryptocoryne wendtii and Cryptocoryne beckettii. Its attractive narrow, pointed leaves and upright growth make it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquascapers.

Underwater, the leaves can develop attractive cherry-red to reddish tones, adding natural colour and contrast to a planted aquarium. The plant grows steadily and can eventually reach around 25 cm (10 inches) in height, making it suitable for both small and large aquariums.

How to Plant Cryptocoryne walkeri

For the best visual effect, plant Cryptocoryne walkeri in small groups or clumps of 4–5 plants. You can also position several groups around rocks, driftwood or other hardscape elements to create a natural, wild-looking aquascape.

Plant the roots into the aquarium substrate while keeping the crown of the plant above the substrate. Once established, Cryptocoryne walkeri can develop a strong root system and provide a beautiful, natural appearance in the aquarium.

Crypt Melt – What You Need to Know

Like many Cryptocoryne species, Cryptocoryne walkeri can experience Crypt melt when it is introduced to a significantly different environment. Changes in water parameters, lighting, temperature, pH, KH, GH or disturbance of the roots can cause the existing leaves to deteriorate.

Do not worry if this happens. Crypt melt does not necessarily mean that the plant has died. The plant can remain alive beneath the substrate while adapting to its new environment and producing new leaves.

Avoid moving the plant after it has been established. Remove heavily decaying leaves when necessary and allow the plant time to recover. With stable aquarium conditions and proper care, new growth can usually appear as the plant adapts to its surroundings.
