Pogostemon erectus

Pogostemon erectus is a beautiful aquatic plant from India that is well known for its distinctive upright growth and dense, needle-like foliage. Unlike many other Pogostemon species commonly found in the aquarium hobby, Pogostemon erectus develops narrow, light-green leaves that grow densely around its upright stems.

This attractive stem plant works particularly well as a midground or background aquarium plant, especially when planted in groups. A dense group of Pogostemon erectus creates a vibrant green, bushy appearance and adds excellent texture and vertical structure to a planted aquarium.

Growing Pogostemon in an Aquarium

Pogostemon erectus can be relatively easy to grow when provided with suitable aquarium conditions. Good aquarium lighting, CO₂ supplementation, and regular fertilisation will encourage healthy growth and help the plant develop a dense, compact appearance.

For best results, plant the individual stems with some space between them initially. As the plant grows, the stems can be trimmed and replanted to create a thicker group.

The plant is also capable of growing in its emersed form. With sufficient light, mature plants can produce attractive candle-like flower spikes with a characteristic scent.

Identification

This plant was originally introduced to the aquarium hobby under the incorrect name Rotala verticillaris. It was later identified as a Pogostemon based on its flowers and was subsequently determined to be Pogostemon deccanensis. The name Pogostemon erectus is still commonly retained in the aquarium trade and hobby.
