Samolus parviflorus Red

Samolus parviflorus Red is a beautiful and relatively uncommon aquarium plant known for its compact growth and attractive red to orange coloration. It is still considered a specialty plant in the aquarium hobby and is more commonly found among plant collectors and specialist aquarium shops than large-scale commercial farms.

Originally collected from the limestone Karst region of Guangxi, China, this plant has also been discussed under different botanical classifications. Some aquarium plant specialists suggest that it may be more closely related to Lysimachia cf. parvifolia than Samolus parviflorus. For aquarium hobbyists, it is primarily valued for its compact growth, colorful foliage, and suitability for planted aquariums.

Appearance & Growth

Samolus parviflorus Red is a short-growing stem plant that works particularly well in the midground of an aquascape. Under strong aquarium lighting, it can remain compact and develop attractive red leaves that grow closely together, creating a rosette-like appearance.

Lighting and nutrient conditions have a noticeable effect on its appearance:

• High light: Encourages stronger red coloration and compact growth.
• Moderate light: Leaves may develop attractive orange tones.
• Good nutrition: Can produce rounder and fuller leaves.
• Low light or nutrient-poor conditions: Growth may become thinner and greener.
• Shade or neglect: The plant may lose much of its red coloration and become predominantly green.

When the plant becomes overcrowded or does not receive enough light, it may produce taller shoots rather than maintaining its compact form.

CO₂ & Water Conditions

Samolus parviflorus Red is considered a relatively easy aquarium plant and can adapt to a range of aquarium conditions. It can grow successfully in non-CO₂-injected aquariums and can tolerate harder, more alkaline water.

However, providing CO₂ injection, sufficient lighting, and regular nutrient availability can significantly improve its growth, leaf development, and coloration.

Its moderate growth rate makes it relatively easy to maintain compared with faster-growing aquarium stem plants. Regular trimming is usually sufficient to keep the plant compact and well-shaped.

Best Placement

This plant is especially suitable for the midground of planted aquariums, where its compact red foliage can create an attractive contrast against green aquarium plants. It can be used to add color and visual interest to nature-style aquascapes, community tanks, and other planted aquarium layouts.
