Rotala mexicana

Rotala mexicana is a beautiful, delicate aquatic stem plant that is especially suitable for nano aquariums, foreground areas, and low-growing aquascapes. Known for its reddish coloration and creeping growth habit, it can add an attractive splash of colour and texture to planted tanks.

This relatively rare aquarium plant is believed to originate from Goiás, Brazil, in South America. It is considered a variant of the highly variable Rotala mexicana and has become a sought-after plant among aquascaping enthusiasts.

Growth & Aquascaping

When newly planted, Rotala mexicana typically grows horizontally along the substrate, creating a low, creeping appearance that works well as a foreground plant. As the plant becomes denser, some stems may begin to grow more upright, eventually forming a compact bush.

Regular trimming allows you to maintain a low-growing carpet-like appearance, while allowing it to grow naturally can create a wider, attractive bush for the foreground or middle ground of your aquarium.

Its small leaves and delicate appearance make Rotala mexicana an excellent choice for nano tanks and planted aquariums. Combining it with green stem plants can create an attractive colour contrast and add more depth to your aquascape.

Care Tips

Provide suitable aquarium lighting and regular nutrient availability to encourage healthy growth and maintain its attractive coloration. Regular trimming can help control its height and encourage a denser growth pattern.
