Riccardia chamedryfolia – Coral Moss / Mini Pellia

Riccardia sp. “Chamedryfolia”, commonly known as Coral Moss or Mini Pellia, is a beautiful and delicate liverwort that is highly valued in aquascaping for its fine, branching structure and compact growth. Its dark to medium green colour and dense ramification make it an excellent choice for creating natural-looking textures on aquarium wood and rocks.

Unlike traditional mosses, Riccardia develops small, firm and finely branched structures that form attractive compact cushions or lawn-like growths. It naturally attaches to hardscape surfaces using rhizoids, gradually covering wood and rocks with a lush green appearance.

Riccardia chamedryfolia for Aquascaping

Riccardia is particularly popular among aquascapers because of its slow growth and delicate appearance. It can be used to add fine detail to hardscape, especially in nature-style aquariums, nano tanks, shrimp tanks and planted aquariums.

It can be attached to aquarium wood or rocks using aquarium-safe glue, tied down with suitable thread, or carefully placed into small cracks and gaps within the hardscape. As it grows, Riccardia gradually forms dense cushions that create a mature and natural aquascape.

Care Requirements

Riccardia sp. “Chamedryfolia” is relatively undemanding, but it develops its best colour, density and compact growth when provided with medium to strong aquarium lighting, adequate CO₂ and a consistent supply of nutrients.

For the best results, introduce Riccardia into an established and well-cycled aquarium with stable water parameters. Good lighting and sufficient CO₂ help encourage dense and highly branched growth.

As the cushions become larger and heavier, they may eventually detach from the hardscape. Regular trimming and maintenance are therefore recommended to keep the plant compact, healthy and well attached.

Where to Use Riccardia chamedryfolia

Riccardia sp. “Chamedryfolia” can be used in many different aquascaping layouts, including:

  • Attaching to aquarium driftwood and branches
  • Covering aquarium rocks and stones
  • Creating detailed foreground or midground textures
  • Adding natural greenery to nano aquariums
  • Shrimp tanks and planted aquariums
  • Creating miniature moss-like landscapes

Its filigree structure and relatively slow growth make it especially suitable for nano aquascapes, where small details can have a major visual impact.

Important Identification Note

Several different Riccardia types are available in the aquarium trade, including plants sold under names such as Riccardia chamedryfolia and Riccardia graeffei. The exact identification of some commercially traded forms has not been conclusively established.

For this reason, this particular aquarium plant is referred to as Riccardia sp. “Chamedryfolia”, which is the trade name commonly associated with this form.
