Myriophyllum Tuberculatum – Red Watermilfoil

Myriophyllum Tuberculatum, commonly known as Red Watermilfoil, is a beautiful fast-growing aquarium stem plant known for its striking red to orange-red coloration and delicate, feather-like leaves. Its fine texture and vibrant colour make it an excellent choice for adding contrast and visual depth to planted aquariums.

For many years, this plant was incorrectly sold as Myriophyllum mattogrossense ‘Red’. However, Myriophyllum tuberculatum is a different species from the true green M. mattogrossense found in South America.

Growing Requirements

Myriophyllum Tuberculatum is best suited to high-tech planted aquariums where strong lighting, CO₂ injection, and adequate nutrients are available. Under suitable conditions, it grows quickly and can reach approximately 20–60 cm (6–12 inches) in height.

Because of its rapid growth, regular trimming is recommended to maintain a dense and compact appearance. The trimmed stems can be replanted directly into the substrate beside the existing group. This allows you to propagate the plant and gradually create a fuller, more attractive group.

Aquascaping Uses

The red to orange-red colour of Myriophyllum Tuberculatum makes it an excellent focal or contrast plant. Planting a group in the midground or background can create an eye-catching display, especially when combined with green, fine-leaved aquarium plants.

Its delicate feather-like foliage provides excellent texture and movement while its red coloration creates a strong contrast against green aquatic plants.
