How to Test KH
- Rinse the test tube and add 5 ml of aquarium water.
- Add the KH reagent one drop at a time, mixing after each drop.
- Continue adding the reagent until the solution changes from pale blue to yellow.
- Count the number of drops used.
- The number of drops corresponds to the KH level in dKH.
Important: If the solution turns yellow after the first drop, the KH is below 1 dKH, indicating extremely low carbonate hardness.
What Does GH Measure?
GH (General Hardness) measures the concentration of dissolved minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium, in aquarium water. GH plays an important role in fish health, aquatic plant growth, and the overall mineral balance of freshwater aquariums.
Different aquatic species have different hardness requirements. Some species prefer softer water, while others thrive in harder water.
General GH Guidelines
- Soft-water species: 3–6 dGH
- Hard-water species: 10–15 dGH
If your aquarium water has a high GH, using RO (reverse osmosis) water can help reduce hardness when appropriate. If GH is too low, mineral sources such as calcium-rich materials or suitable GH supplements can be used to increase mineral content.
How to Test GH

- The solution should turn dark pink.

- Continue until the colour changes from pink to blue.
- Count the drops used to determine the GH level in dGH.
Important: If the solution turns blue after the first drop, the GH is below 1 dGH, indicating extremely soft water.
