Rotala Bonsai
Rotala Bonsai, scientifically identified as Rotala indica, is a unique and compact aquatic plant that is still relatively uncommon in the aquarium hobby. It has previously been sold under trade names such as Ammania sp. “Bonsai” and Rotala bonsai, which has caused some confusion about its true identity.
Rotala indica has a distinctive appearance that resembles a miniature version of Bacopa caroliniana. It develops straight, relatively thick stems with small, rounded leaves and produces a compact growth pattern. Under strong aquarium lighting, the growing tips and stems can develop attractive reddish coloration.
Ideal for Nano and Planted Aquariums
With a mature height of around 4–8 inches, Rotala Bonsai is particularly suitable for nano aquariums, planted tanks, and aquascapes. It can be planted in groups in the foreground or middle ground, where its compact form creates a dense and attractive appearance.
Although it grows relatively slowly, providing the right conditions can encourage healthy and compact growth. Rotala Bonsai should be planted in an area with good access to light and should not be placed in heavy shade.
Rotala Bonsai Care Requirements
For the best growth and coloration, provide:
- Lighting: Moderate to high lighting; around 0.5 W/L or more is recommended depending on the aquarium setup
- CO₂: A consistent CO₂ supply is recommended
- Nutrients: Regular supply of essential aquarium plant nutrients
- Temperature: 18–30°C
- pH: 5.0–7.0
- Growth Rate: Slow to moderate
- Placement: Foreground or middle ground
- Height: Approximately 4–8 inches
Rotala indica vs. Rotala rotundifolia
There is considerable confusion surrounding the name Rotala indica in the aquarium trade. Historically, Rotala rotundifolia was introduced to the aquarium hobby under the incorrect name “Rotala indica”. As a result, reddish forms of Rotala rotundifolia are still sometimes sold under this name.
True Rotala indica is a different species. The plant previously sold as Ammania sp. “Bonsai” was later identified as true Rotala indica. It has also been confused with Lindernia sp. “India”.
Rotala indica naturally occurs in warmer regions of Asia and can commonly be found growing as an annual weed in rice paddies. It has also been introduced to other rice-growing regions around the world.
