Rorippa aquatica (Water Cabbage)

Rorippa aquatica, commonly known as Water Cabbage, is a unique and attractive aquatic plant that brings a distinctive look to planted aquariums and aquascapes. With its unusual, serrated leaves and compact growth, this plant is suitable for both foreground and midground placement. Its leaf shape can vary depending on growing conditions, making it an interesting choice for aquarium enthusiasts looking to create a natural and eye-catching underwater landscape.

Growth and Propagation

Rorippa aquatica is a relatively fast-growing aquatic plant that can be grown in both low-tech and high-tech planted aquariums. It can propagate through plantlets that develop from mature leaves, producing new roots and fresh leaves. Stem cuttings can also be replanted to encourage further growth. Handle newly formed plantlets carefully while they establish themselves.

Lighting and Care Requirements

For healthy growth, Rorippa aquatica prefers relatively cool water, moderate to high lighting, and a nutrient-rich aquarium substrate. Although it can grow without additional CO₂ in suitable aquarium conditions, CO₂ supplementation and regular liquid fertilization can encourage faster growth and more vigorous development. Regular trimming may be necessary to maintain its desired shape and prevent overcrowding.

Why Choose Rorippa aquatica for Your Aquarium?

With its unusual leaf structure and versatile growth habit, Rorippa aquatica is an excellent option for aquascaping enthusiasts who want something different from common aquarium plants. It can add texture and visual interest to the foreground or midground and complement other aquatic plants in a nature-style aquascape.
