Heteranthera zosterifolia ‘Star Grass’

Heteranthera zosterifolia ‘Star Grass’ is an attractive, fast-growing aquatic stem plant known for its bright green, lance-shaped leaves and lush appearance. Native to South America, particularly Brazil, this plant naturally grows in stagnant waters and swampy areas. Its vibrant colour and dense growth make it a popular choice for creating beautiful, natural-looking planted aquariums.

In aquascaping, Star Grass is suitable for Dutch-style aquariums and nature aquascapes. It can be used in the foreground, midground, or background depending on the desired layout and trimming height. Regular pruning helps maintain its shape, encourages bushier growth, and creates a dense green effect that adds depth and contrast to your aquascape.

Another interesting feature of Heteranthera zosterifolia is its ability to indicate certain nutrient deficiencies. A lack of nitrate (NO₃) may cause its leaves to become transparent, while insufficient phosphate (PO₄) can result in darker leaf coloration. Observing the plant’s appearance can help aquarists monitor nutrient balance and maintain healthy aquatic plant growth.

Whether you are creating a lush planted tank or adding vibrant green colour to an existing aquascape, Star Grass is an excellent option for aquascaping enthusiasts in Sri Lanka.
