Rotala rotundifolia Red – Red Aquarium Stem Plant

Rotala rotundifolia Red is a popular aquatic stem plant originating from Southeast Asia, widely appreciated by aquascaping enthusiasts for its delicate foliage and beautiful red coloration. With its slender stems and small, rounded-to-elongated leaves, this plant adds vibrant colour, depth, and contrast to planted aquariums.

When provided with suitable lighting, a nutrient-rich environment, and regular aquarium plant fertilization, Rotala rotundifolia Red can develop attractive shades of red. Using a quality aquarium plant fertilizer containing iron and other essential nutrients can help support healthy growth and enhance its natural coloration.

Ideal for Background Aquascaping

Rotala rotundifolia Red is an excellent choice for the background of a planted aquarium. When planted in groups, its fine foliage creates a dense, bushy appearance that contrasts beautifully with green aquatic plants. It is particularly suitable for nature-style aquascapes and colourful planted tank layouts.

For the best results, separate the plant bundle into individual stems and plant them approximately 1–1.5 cm apart. This spacing allows each stem to receive adequate light and room to grow, helping the plant develop into a thick, vibrant red background.

Growth, Pruning and Propagation

This fast-growing aquarium stem plant benefits from regular trimming to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth. Without sufficient light reaching the lower portions of the plant, the bottom leaves may deteriorate over time.

Propagation is simple: cut a healthy stem and replant the cutting into the aquarium substrate. The cutting can develop roots and grow into a new plant, allowing you to expand your planted aquarium naturally.
