Cryptocoryne x willisii “nevillii”

Cryptocoryne x willisii “nevillii” is a hardy and undemanding freshwater aquarium plant that is well suited for both beginners and experienced aquascapers. It is a relatively slow-growing Cryptocoryne that can gradually form a dense group of attractive leaf rosettes through underground runners.

Although this plant has been widely sold under the name “Cryptocoryne nevillii”, that name actually refers to a different species. The plant commonly known by this trade name belongs to the Cryptocoryne x willisii group, which consists of natural hybrids involving species such as Cryptocoryne parva, C. beckettii, and C. walkeri from Sri Lanka.

Appearance & Growth

Underwater, Cryptocoryne x willisii “nevillii” produces medium-green leaves that may develop subtle reddish-brown tones depending on aquarium conditions. Its leaves are relatively short and more ovate compared with Cryptocoryne x willisii “lucens”, making it a useful choice when you want a compact and natural-looking aquarium plant.

The submerged plant generally grows around 5–15 cm, although well-established plants receiving good nutrition can sometimes reach approximately 20 cm. Plants are commonly supplied in their emersed form and may initially appear taller. Once planted underwater, newly produced leaves normally become shorter and adapt to the aquarium environment.

Care Requirements

This is an easy-care aquarium plant that can tolerate a wide range of water conditions. Additional CO₂ is not essential, making it suitable for many low-tech freshwater aquariums. However, CO₂ supplementation can encourage faster and healthier growth.

Providing nutrients through a nutrient-rich substrate and regular macro- and micronutrient supplementation can also improve plant development. The plant does not require intense lighting, although moderate aquarium lighting is recommended for good growth.
