Rotala macrandra ‘Butterfly’ – Red Aquatic Plant for Planted Aquariums

Rotala macrandra ‘Butterfly’ is a beautiful and highly sought-after aquatic stem plant, admired for its distinctive leaf shape and striking deep red to magenta colours. It is an excellent choice for aquascaping enthusiasts who want to create a vibrant, colourful focal point in a planted aquarium.

Although it can resemble Rotala rotundifolia ‘Red’, Rotala macrandra ‘Butterfly’ stands out with its richer red tones and unique foliage. Under suitable growing conditions, this plant develops multiple side shoots, allowing it to form dense, attractive bushes that add depth and contrast to aquascapes.

Growing Requirements

Rotala macrandra ‘Butterfly’ is best suited to experienced aquarists because it can be sensitive to changes in water conditions and aquarium parameters. To encourage healthy growth and intense red coloration, provide strong aquarium lighting, a reliable CO₂ injection system, and soft water.

Maintaining stable water parameters is essential, as sudden fluctuations can lead to stunted growth or poor plant health. Regular micronutrient supplementation can also help support healthy development and enhance its beautiful red and magenta colours.

This stunning red stem plant is ideal for creating colourful background sections, eye-catching plant groups, and high-contrast layouts in professionally designed planted tanks.
