Ammania senegalensis – Red Stem Aquarium Plant

Ammannia senegalensis is an attractive stem plant from Western and Central Africa, belonging to the Onagraceae family. It is a popular choice for planted aquariums and aquascaping enthusiasts who want to add beautiful red and green colours to their underwater landscapes.

This plant features uniquely curved leaves that arch downwards, creating an elegant appearance. It is typically supplied in its emersed form, with green, broad leaves. Once planted underwater (submerged) in an aquarium with strong lighting, the leaves gradually become narrower and develop beautiful reddish tones. This transformation usually takes around one to two weeks under suitable growing conditions.

For healthy growth and vibrant red colouration, Ammannia senegalensis requires strong aquarium lighting and a nutrient-rich substrate. It generally performs better in soft water and benefits from adequate nutrients and stable water conditions.

Important Growing Tip: Avoid allowing this plant to grow above the water surface. When it reaches the surface, it may begin producing emersed growth and shed its existing submerged leaves as it adapts to the new growing conditions.

If you are looking for a distinctive red aquarium stem plant to enhance your planted tank, Ammannia senegalensis is an excellent addition to your aquascape.
