Hair Grass Mini (Eleocharis belem)

Hair Grass Mini (Eleocharis belem) is a compact, slow-growing carpeting plant that is popular for creating a natural green foreground in planted aquariums. Compared with traditional Dwarf Hairgrass, Hair Grass Mini has finer leaves that tend to spread more horizontally, creating a softer and more compact appearance across the aquarium substrate.

It is commonly associated with several Eleocharis species, including Eleocharis parvula, Eleocharis belem, and Eleocharis acicularis. In the aquarium hobby, Eleocharis belem is often referred to as Mini Dwarf Hairgrass.

Hair Grass Mini vs Dwarf Hairgrass

The main differences between Hair Grass Mini and traditional Dwarf Hairgrass are size, growth rate, and appearance.

Hair Grass Mini generally remains shorter, usually reaching around 3–5 cm under suitable aquarium conditions. It is also a relatively slow-growing carpeting plant, so establishing a dense carpet can take time. Providing adequate lighting, nutrients, and CO₂ can encourage healthier growth and runner production.

Unlike traditional Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis parvula), which tends to grow more vertically, the leaves of Eleocharis belem can develop with a more horizontal or spreading growth pattern. This makes it a great choice for creating a low, natural-looking foreground in aquascapes.

Growing in Your Aquarium

For the best results, plant Hair Grass in small portions throughout the substrate. With consistent lighting, suitable nutrients, and stable water conditions, the plant can gradually spread through runners and form a dense carpet.

Because it is a slow-growing plant, patience is important when establishing a full carpet. A CO₂-injected planted aquarium with good lighting can significantly support its growth and help achieve a healthier, more compact carpet.

Whether you are creating a nature aquarium, Iwagumi aquascape, or another planted tank style, Hair Grass Mini is an excellent option for adding a natural green foreground.
