Vallisneria sp. “asiatica”
Vallisneria sp. “asiatica” is an attractive and easy-to-grow aquatic plant known for its distinctive twisted leaves and moderate height. It is commonly supplied by aquatic plant nurseries under the name Vallisneria sp. “asiatica” and may be related to Vallisneria asiatica var. biwaensis. Compared with that variety, “asiatica” is generally recognized by its narrower leaves.
Growing to around 30–35 cm, Vallisneria sp. “asiatica” is an excellent choice for the background of small to medium aquariums. In taller aquascapes, it can also be used effectively in the midground to create a natural grass-like appearance and add vertical movement to the planted tank.
This Vallisneria is considered a beginner-friendly aquarium plant and adapts well to a range of aquarium conditions. A nutrient-rich substrate and at least medium aquarium lighting can encourage healthy growth. It generally performs well at temperatures around 20–28°C and prefers slightly acidic to neutral water conditions.
Like many Vallisneria species, Vallisneria spreads through runners, producing new plants around the parent plant. This makes it useful for gradually creating a dense planted area, although its spreading habit should be considered when planning its placement.
