Bacopa caroliniana – Live Aquarium Stem Plant

Bacopa caroliana is a popular and easy-to-recognise aquatic stem plant that has been a favourite among aquarium hobbyists for many years. Native to the southeastern United States, this versatile plant naturally grows in marshes and wetlands in both submerged and emersed conditions. Its attractive green, oval-shaped leaves and upright growth make it a suitable choice for planted aquariums and aquascaping layouts.

One of the most distinctive features of Bacopa caroliniana is the refreshing lemon-like scent released when its leaves are crushed. The leaves grow opposite each other along the stem, with their bases wrapping around it. Different cultivated varieties are available, including smaller-leaved and variegated forms, offering additional options for planted tank designs.

Bacopa caroliniana is a relatively slow-growing aquarium plant that benefits from strong lighting to maintain healthy growth. Although CO₂ injection and additional fertilisation are not essential under all conditions, supplying suitable macro- and micronutrients can support better growth and plant development. With its upright stems and distinctive foliage, it can be used in the midground or background of an aquarium, depending on the tank size and desired aquascape.
