Ceramic Ring – Biological Filter Media for Aquariums

Ceramic Ring is a highly effective biological filter media designed to provide a large surface area for beneficial bacteria in aquarium filtration systems. These bacteria play an essential role in the aquarium nitrogen cycle by helping convert toxic ammonia and nitrite into less harmful nitrate.

The porous structure of ceramic rings provides numerous microscopic spaces where beneficial nitrifying bacteria can colonize. The larger the available surface area, the more bacteria your aquarium filter can support, helping maintain a healthier and more stable aquatic environment.

Key Benefits

  • Provides a large surface area for beneficial bacteria
  • Supports biological filtration in freshwater and marine aquariums
  • Helps establish and maintain the aquarium nitrogen cycle
  • Supports bacteria responsible for breaking down ammonia and nitrite
  • Porous structure allows water to flow through the media
  • Suitable for internal filters, hang-on-back filters, canister filters and other filtration systems
  • Can be used in filter media bags for easy maintenance
  • Long-lasting biological filter media when properly maintained

How Does Ring Biological Filtration Work?

Ceramic rings themselves do not directly remove ammonia or nitrite from the water. Instead, they provide a suitable surface where beneficial nitrifying bacteria can grow.

During the nitrogen cycle, these bacteria help convert toxic ammonia → nitrite → nitrate. This biological filtration process is essential for maintaining good water quality and protecting aquarium fish from harmful ammonia and nitrite levels.

Because new ceramic rings do not contain an established colony of beneficial bacteria, they need time to become biologically active. Proper aquarium cycling allows bacteria to colonize the ceramic media.

Where Should Be Placed in the Filter?

For best results, It should generally be placed after mechanical filter media.

A typical filtration arrangement can be:

Mechanical Filtration → Biological Filtration → Chemical Filtration

Sponges, foam or filter floss should normally be used before the ceramic rings to remove larger particles such as fish waste, uneaten food and plant debris. This helps prevent the ceramic media from becoming clogged and allows water to flow efficiently through the biological filtration stage.

If you use chemical media such as activated carbon or zeolite, it can generally be placed after the biological media.

How to Use

  1. Rinse the ceramic rings gently before use to remove manufacturing dust.
  2. Use dechlorinated or conditioned water when rinsing established media.
  3. Place the ceramic rings inside your aquarium filter.
  4. For easier maintenance, you can place them inside a filter media bag.
  5. Keep the ceramic rings submerged whenever possible so the beneficial bacteria remain in a suitable environment.
  6. Allow time for beneficial bacteria to colonize the media during aquarium cycling.

How Many Ceramic Rings Do You Need?

There is no universal number of ceramic rings required for every aquarium. The amount depends on your aquarium size, fish stocking level, feeding habits and filter capacity.

As a general approach, use as much suitable biological media as your filter can comfortably accommodate while still maintaining good water flow.

A larger aquarium with a heavier fish load may require more biological filtration capacity than a lightly stocked aquarium.

How to Clean

Over time, ceramic rings can accumulate debris and reduce water flow. They should be cleaned gently when necessary.

During a routine aquarium water change, place the ceramic rings in a container of siphoned aquarium water and gently swish them to remove excess dirt and debris.

Avoid washing established ceramic rings under untreated tap water, using soap or aggressively scrubbing the media. These practices can damage or remove the beneficial bacterial colonies living on the ceramic rings.

The goal is not to make the ceramic rings look brand new. A slightly dirty-looking ceramic ring can still contain a healthy population of beneficial bacteria.

When Should Be Replaced?

It can last for a long time when properly maintained. They do not necessarily need to be replaced on a fixed schedule.

Replace them when they become significantly worn, crumble, break apart or become so degraded that they no longer provide an effective porous surface or allow adequate water flow.

If the ceramic media is still structurally sound and water can flow through it properly, there may be no need for frequent replacement.

How to Replace

One important point to remember is that established ceramic rings contain beneficial bacteria.

Replacing all your biological media at once can significantly reduce the bacterial population in your aquarium and may contribute to an ammonia or nitrite spike.

For this reason, it is better to replace ceramic rings gradually.

Recommended method:

  1. Remove approximately half of the old ceramic rings.
  2. Add the new ceramic rings.
  3. Keep the remaining established ceramic rings in the filter.
  4. Allow the new media time to become colonized by beneficial bacteria.
  5. After around 2–3 weeks, if water parameters remain stable, replace the remaining old media if necessary.
  6. Monitor ammonia and nitrite levels during the transition.

Using separate filter media bags can make this process easier because old and new ceramic rings can be kept separate.

Help Cycle a New Aquarium?

Yes. Established ceramic rings from a mature, healthy aquarium already contain beneficial bacteria. Transferring established biological media to a new aquarium can help introduce beneficial bacteria and support the cycling process.

However, biological media should only be transferred from a healthy aquarium to avoid introducing unwanted pathogens or pests.

An aquarium test kit should be used to monitor ammonia, nitrite and nitrate during cycling.

Important Note

They do not directly remove ammonia, nitrite or nitrate from aquarium water. Their main purpose is to provide a large porous surface for beneficial microorganisms that perform biological filtration.

For the best results, combine ceramic rings with appropriate mechanical filtration and maintain good aquarium water quality through regular maintenance and water changes.

Suitable For

  • Freshwater aquariums
  • Planted aquariums
  • Community fish tanks
  • Shrimp aquariums
  • Breeding tanks
  • Marine aquariums
  • Canister filters
